Category: Grassy Weed

Bemudagrass

This grassy weed is often called "wiregrass" and is very noticeable due to its unique texture and aggressive growth through desirable turfgrass.

Bermudagrass Facts:

  • Goes dormant in the winter, but is always present
  • Warm-season perennial grass
  • Aggressively spreads with both above-ground and underground rooting structures
  • Gray-green-colored leaves are about 1.5" to 6" long.
  • Can grow up to 24" tall if unmowed
  • Thrives in full sun, high temperatures with little need for moisture
  • Reproduces by seeds and rooting structures

Control Tips:

  • Specialty selective, post-emergent herbicide applications have been proven to reduce this weed over time.
  • Thick turfgrass areas typically yield fewer weeds. However, due to this weed's aggressive nature, specialty herbicides will need to be a regular part of the treatment regimen. Aerating lawn areas with this weed can spread this weed.
  • Neglecting conditions favorable for desirable cool-season grass will cause this weed to grow more aggressively.
  • Mowing at 3-4" will encourage a healthy lawn.
  • Irrigate lawn areas regularly so they receive 1-2" of water each week.
  • Proactive, comprehensive lawn care programs are recommended for a healthier lawn, but will not drastically suppress this aggressive weed.
