Chickweed

This broadleaf weed is one of the first weeds spotted in the new year as it emerges over winter and takes over weak, thin areas in the lawn.

Chickweed Facts:

  • Found late winter through spring in weak lawn areas
  • Winter annual
  • Grows 3-6" tall but can get taller in the shade
  • Egg-shaped leaves with a pointed tip
  • 1/4" flowers are a cluster of 5 petals
  • Spreads by seeds that can remain viable for up to 10 years

Control Tips:

  • Fairly easy to control by spraying with selective herbicide after weeds emerge, however, conditions may not be warm enough for application until mid-spring. Fall herbicide treatments can reduce this weed if timed appropriately.
  • Pre-emergent applied in the fall can reduce weeds from germinating, but not always practical if fall seeding needs to be performed.
  • Thick turfgrass areas will yield fewer weeds. Fertilize regularly, aerate and overseed each fall.
  • Mowing at 3-4" will encourage a healthy lawn and reduce weed growth.
  • Irrigate lawn areas regularly so they receive 1-2" of water each week.
  • Proactive, comprehensive lawn care programs are recommended for best control.
