Oxalis

This broadleaf weed begins in small, insignificant patches and rapidly progresses to takeover lawn areas.

Oxalis Facts:

  • Also referred to as "Yellow Woodsorrel"
  • Begins with green leaves and then turns to reddish-purple
  • Perennial weed
  • Found mostly in late spring through late summer
  • Low-growing, typically under 2" tall
  • Three leaflets and often confused with clover and black medic
  • 1/4" yellow flowers
  • Thrives in moist, fertile soils but can grow almost anywhere
  • Spreads by ejecting seeds up to 12 ft. away and also with underground rhizomes

Control Tips:

  • Hand-pulling can be effective when plants are very young if the entire root system is removed
  • Fairly difficult to control. Spray with selective herbicide several times throughout the year, after weeds emerge.
  • Thick turfgrass areas will yield fewer weeds. Fertilize regularly, aerate and overseed each fall.
  • Mowing at 3-4" will encourage a healthy lawn and reduce weed growth.
  • Irrigate lawn areas regularly so they receive 1-2" of water each week.
  • Proactive, comprehensive lawn care programs are recommended for best control.
