Wild Violet

This broadleaf weed is known for its beautiful flowers but despised for its ability to invade lawn areas, crowding out desirable turfgrass.

Wild Violet Facts:

  • Found from spring through fall
  • Persistent, perennial weed with an extensive root system
  • Low-growing, typically under 2" tall
  • Heart-shaped, scalloped leaves ranging from 1/2 - 1 1/2"
  • 3/4 to 1" bluish purple flowers
  • Commonly found in damp, shady areas but will tolerate full sun
  • Spreads primarily by creeping stems that root in throughout the lawn

Control Tips:

  • Hand-pulling is discouraged as plants will snap off of roots encouraging re-growth.
  • Very difficult to control. Spray with selective herbicide multiple times throughout the year, particularly in the fall, over a period of several years.
  • Thick turfgrass areas will yield fewer weeds. Fertilize regularly, aerate and overseed each fall.
  • Mowing at 3-4" will encourage a healthy lawn and reduce weed growth.
  • Irrigate lawn areas regularly so they receive 1-2" of water each week.
  • Proactive, comprehensive lawn care programs are recommended for best control.
