Signs Your Lawn is Ready for Fertilization

  • Yellowing or Pale Grass – A common sign of nitrogen deficiency; your lawn should be a rich green.
  • Slow Growth – If your grass isn’t growing much during the growing season, it may lack nutrients.
  • Thinning Grass – Sparse or patchy turf can indicate a lack of essential nutrients.
  • Weeds Taking Over – Weak grass allows weeds to spread more easily.
  • Increased Lawn Disease – Nutrient-deficient lawns are more vulnerable to disease and fungus.
  • Bare Spots or Patchy Areas – Uneven soil fertility can cause bald or thin areas in your lawn.
  • Poor Recovery After Mowing or Foot Traffic – Grass that doesn’t bounce back quickly may be stressed due to poor nutrition.

Are Our Lawn Fertilization Services Safe for Pets and Children?

Yes. At Natural Green Systems, we offer pet- and child-safe fertilization options. We recommend allowing 24 hours after application before heavy activity, and we’ll always inform you of any special precautions during service.

Fertilizing the Right Way

On its face, fertilizing your lawn seems pretty easy. You can go to the home and garden store, pick up a bag of fertilizer, and scatter it over your lawn, right? This is the exact right way to damage your lawn. We are here to help you. First, we start with a soil test to determine the acidity of your soil, which will help us determine what kinds of fertilizer your grass is thirsty for. We don’t want to give your lawn more of what it already has because that can also damage your lawn.

Depending on the kind of fertilizer we recommend, we may use one of three spreaders:

  • A rotary spreader, which looks like a small wheelbarrow, works best for medium to large yards, about 2,000 square feet or larger
  • A drop spreader works best for lawns that are smaller than 2,000 square feet and drop fertilizer right to the ground instead of fanning out from the device
  • A hand-held spreader is great for spot work or addressing tight areas of your lawn

"Come December my lawn will still be green, healthy and full because of the excellent care being given to it now."

Arich and his partner went above and beyond yesterday applying leafgro and organic soil enhancement to my huge yard. Parts of the front lawn had developed a fungus and I can almost hear my grass and soil letting out a sigh of relief after the application yesterday. They also took care to wash down the walkway and sidewalk too.

Because I'm a longtime Natural Green client this I know, come December my lawn will still be green, healthy and full because of the excellent care being given to it now.

Setting Your Lawn Up for Success

Before we begin to spread fertilizer, we will do one very important thing: check the weather. If there is heavy rain anticipated in the next few days, we will delay your lawn fertilization because heavy rains can simply wash away the fertilizer. We also want to avoid very wet grass on the day we fertilize, as we will want to give your lawn a thorough watering after the application of the fertilizer.

Another thing to do before we spread fertilizer is to make sure that weeds are under control. The same fertilizer that will help your lawn thrive is great for helping weeds grow, too, so we want to be sure that your weed populations are under control so that new ones don’t sprout alongside your grass.

To prep your lawn before we fertilize, it is also recommended that your lawn is mowed a few days before the fertilizer is applied. This is because applying an even layer of fertilizer to an even surface is easier. It will also mean that the nutrients in the fertilizer will penetrate the ground faster. You do not want to mow directly after fertilizing, as this can harm your grass.
