This grassy weed is easily spotted in spring due to its rapid growth rate and lighter color than desirable turfgrass.

Roughstalk Bluegrass Facts:

• Most noticeable in cooler seasons of spring and fall but declines in the summer 
• Perennial, cool-season grassy weed
• Clumping growth habit with patches several feet in diameter
• Stalks often turn reddish at the base as plants mature
• Prefers semi-shady, poor-drained locations but can adapt to full-sun areas
• Spreads by seeds and above ground root structures

Control Tips:

• Digging out and physically removing clumps can have limited success and isn't typically recommended.
• No control materials exist for this weed. Non-selective materials may control this weed but newly-seeded areas may still have re-growth from dormant weed seeds in the soil.
• Thick turfgrass areas will yield fewer weeds. Fertilize regularly, aerate and overseed each fall.
• Mowing at 3-4" will encourage a healthy lawn and reduce weed growth. Mow more frequently during periods this weed thrives to minimize its appearance. This weed is typically the most problematic in spring and then will not be as noticeable later. 
• Irrigate lawn areas regularly so they receive 1-2" of water each week. 
• Proactive, comprehensive lawn care programs are recommended for best control.
